When I see 20-hour overnight stops in a city I want to visit “on the way” to Tokyo, I don’t see it as detrimental. To me, it’s a side-trip with enough time to check things out, eat some good food, and get a good nights sleep before the flight out to Tokyo – but I totally understand that not everyone will see it that way. If you see it like I see it though, I think this is a good price for what you get.
Just make sure that you’re making a mental note of your actual arrival +2 days later in Tokyo.

Today’s USD/JPY exchange rate is the best it’s been for American tourists visiting Japan since 1986. It’s currently 163 USD per JPY at time of writing.
Prices for flights have been in an uptrend since February of this year, so flights are more expensive than they usually are, but I think that your overall costs will be lower due to cheaper Japanese goods/services when you arrive.
Previous deal for Tokyo was about $890, but had a connection. I think this is a good price for nonstop, round-trip.
Tokyo in August will be hot, but there is nothing stopping you from heading to cooler northern prefectures like Hokkaido which has an average historical high of about 78f.

This works as an Open-jaw, which means you can fly into Tokyo and return from Osaka for Jan-Mar trips. This will allow you to visit more of Japan while saving you from having to buy a shinkansen fare back to your starting airport.

Read this: These are one-way fares. The reason why we’re mentioning them is because most of the time, one-way fares to Japan are usually priced as high as their round-trip counterparts.
Here are some ideas for putting these one-way fares to use:
Create your own open-jaw itinerary to visit more cities during your trip. For example, take the one way into Fukuoka, then take the shinkansen to Osaka, then Kyoto, then Tokyo. Then take the one-way out of Tokyo.
Use points for the return trip. If you don’t quite have 120,000 points laying around, you can buy the one-way to Fukuoka with cash, and then buy the return out of Tokyo with points. This is usually cheaper than trying to do a “cash-and-points” redemption by itself.
Some of you that are on a real work Visa or Student Visa will probably benefit from this.
