American Airlines has “Basic Economy” round-trip flights from Dallas (DFW) to San Jose del Cabo (SJD) for $198-$203, NONSTOP. One-ways are also available for around half-that. Availability is sparse and scattered from July to September. Most departures are on Tuesdays and most returns are on Thursdays, this isn’t the best pairing unless you plan to stay for 2-nights mid-week, or do a 9-night stay.

Note: This is during Hurricane Season. We suggest that you buy insurance directly from an insurer such as Allianz Travel Insurance and select a policy that covers the following line items: “Complete cessation of services:24 hours”, “Destination uninhabitable”, “Travel Delay:Natural Disaster”, “Travel Delay:Severe Storm/Route Closed”. If you buy insurance from the airline, make sure it has these protections, sometimes they will sell a policy at checkout that doesn’t have enough coverage. Read your policy carefully before purchasing.

Note: Cabo dips into this price range often.

Note: “Basic Economy” fares do not include a free carry-on bag. Only a small personal item, like a Jansport City Scout backpack is free. Checked bags cost +$25 each-way. Seats are randomly assigned prior to boarding.

I’m currently using the Jansport Right Pack as my “personal item” when I fly in “basic economy”. Which is slightly more than expensive than the Jansport City Scout because its fabric is Cordura instead of Polyester. Both have the same dimensions which are: 18″ x 13″ x 8.5″. There is half-an-inch of extra depth than what is officially allowed by AA, but it has never been a problem for me. The bag has a large main compartment, which makes it ideal for stuffing as much as you can into the limited amount of space.

  • Example Dates: (Priceline / BookingBuddy) Jul 17 – Jul 19 / Jul 17 – Jul 26 / Jul 24 – Aug 02 / Aug 07 – Aug 09 / Aug 14 – Aug 23 / One-way: Sep 02, 04 / Other dates: There are more dates available than the ones we list here, experiment on your own. Use the “Flexible Dates” tool on Priceline.

Before you finalize your purchase, do a quick check on Tripadvisor to see if any other site or airline is offering a better deal. Different booking websites will often have differing routes, prices, and availability.

I was able to pull this fare up on Priceline. Screenshot taken at 8:18 PM on 07/14/18.

Note: OTAs such as Travelocity and Priceline allow free cancellation without penalty within 24-hours after you purchase. As deals sell-out or expire quickly, this policy will allow you to “lock-in” the cheap fare while you sort out a plan. Just keep in mind that after 24-hours you will not be able to cancel without the regular penalty.
